Satisfying Words
Wise words satisfy like a good meal; the right words bring satisfaction.
—Proverbs 18:20 NLT
—Proverbs 18:20 NLT
If we examine closely the trends of everyday speech, we may find that there is somewhat of a cultural tendency to rely on phrases such as, “I do not want to get sick,” rather than saying phrases like, “I want to stay healed.” Obviously, the phrase that gives heavier weight to one’s good health will bring more satisfaction and comfort than the phrase that gives weight to one’s anticipated sickness. Even when aiming to speak positively, our choice of words can either bring satisfaction, hope, and comfort or dissatisfaction and anxiety, depending on which we choose.
What words do you use to affirm yourself when either praying or speaking positively? Psalm 34:12-13 says, “Does anyone want to live a life that is long and prosperous? Then keep your tongue from speaking evil.” Therefore, according to this verse, to help us live long, prosperous lives, we must actively bridle our tongues from negativity. As much as possible, our speech should not be used to just talk against defeat, sickness, division, lack, etc., without speaking just as much (or if not more) about victory, health, unity, and abundance. Use of the latter set of words obviously brings more satisfaction and peace to the mind than the former set of words. Let us remember to always season our minds with positive words about ourselves.
Our reference verse today says wise words satisfy like a good meal. Bring satisfaction to yourself by speaking life into your day. Aim to pledge your allegiance to the outcome you wish to experience more than you choose to glorify the reality you are aiming to avoid. The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit (Proverbs 18:20). If you had to eat the fruit of the words you speak to yourself, will those words taste like good fruit? Be kind to yourself. Speak blessings and not curses; life and not death. You have the power to use your language to bring satisfaction to your life.
Lots of Love, XO
